A weekend at Casa da Música

14–15 March

It is to the enchanting sound of flutes that we head into a weekend of unmissable musical events. This year, for the first time, the traditional instrumental marathons feature the flute as the star attraction, with students and teachers of the instrument spreading out across various spaces in the Casa da Música. Performing solo or in groups, in a cheerful and enthusiastic atmosphere, they will offer us an unforgettable experience of musical sharing from 10 am on Saturday. In the late afternoon, the baton is passed to the experienced hands of the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra, continuing with the programme ‘Raízes Populares’ (Folk Roots), dedicated to three great composers from Eastern Europe: the Romanian Enescu and the Hungarians Kodály and Bartók. It is from this very ensemble that four soloists step forward for the welcome concert on Sunday morning, preceded by a delicious coffee with cream. The wind instruments return, echoing the marathon of the previous day, but in this case with a chamber music repertoire ranging from the Baroque to Neoclassicism, featuring works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Muczynski and Françaix. The final journey is undertaken through the voices of the Casa da Música Choir and spans several centuries, celebrating the German choral tradition, where song and classical composition intersect, penned by names such as Isaac, Schoenberg, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler. A return to an essentially romantic realm for a weekend in the clouds. Enjoy.
