Heitor Villa-Lobos was a groundbreaking 20th-century composer who fused classical, popular, and indigenous influences into a unique musical language. A self-taught and visionary artist, he drew inspiration from Brazil’s cultural and natural diversity to shape a vast and innovative body of work. His legacy endures as a powerful symbol of cultural identity, creativity, and artistic freedom.

François Bou, artistic director of Casa da Música, helps us to interpret the new season’s programme and to discover within it the foundations of his unifying vision for the project. A venue open to the synergies of all artistic forms, where music is at once ‘rooted and universal’.

At the closing concert of João Carlos Pinto’s artistic residency, the Casa da Música do Porto Symphony Orchestra performed the world premiere of the work ‘La Planète sauvage’.

The Casa da Música Children’s Choir and the Young Singers of Guimarães come together for a programme of sharing and connection. From traditional repertoire to works by Fernando Lopes-Graça and Eurico Carrapatoso, cultures and sounds intertwine. A concert that celebrates brotherhood and hope through music.

Casa da Música is celebrating Christmas with a festival featuring choirs, orchestras and concerts for all ages. From Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker to choral programmes and educational activities, the music spans a range of styles and traditions. An invitation to experience the Christmas spirit through a diverse and engaging programme.

Rem Koolhaas’s architecture inspires a convergence of the arts at Casa da Música, with Bianca Dacosta as Artist in Residence 2026. Her stage production engages with Heitor Villa-Lobos’s *Floresta do Amazonas*, bringing together music and imagery. A project that blends art, nature and environmental awareness into a sensory experience.

In 2026 and 2027, Casa da Música will welcome Catalan composer Hèctor Parra, one of the most creative and expressive voices in contemporary music, as Composer in Residence. Gifted with a great knowledge of orchestration, Parra has mastered the art of transforming sound into living matter, creating luminous textures and orchestral colours of immediate seduction.

The theme Roots / Resonances guides the 2026 season, exploring the relationship between tradition and contemporary creation. From classical music — with a focus on Heitor Villa-Lobos — to popular music, cultural influences and identities intertwine. A journey that links past and present, revealing how those roots continue to resonate in today’s music.

Artistic Residencies highlight Hèctor Parra as Composer in Residence (2026–2027) and Bianca Dacosta in 2026. From contemporary sound to visual creation, different artistic languages intersect. A programme that reinforces Casa da Música as a space for experimentation and creative exchange.
