The Return of Steve Reich

Remix Ensemble Casa da Música

Irresistible sonorous imaginaries permeate the pieces in this programme, which brings together Remix Ensemble and renowned international artists. The ensemble Synergy Vocals premieres a new work by the legendary Steve Reich inspired by a biblical phrase from Genesis: “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” The programme opens with Keter by German composer Sarah Nemtsov, also departing from a mysterious biblical concept. Keter evokes everything that is beyond human comprehension and is the Hebrew term for “crown” – the word of the year during the pandemic in which it was written. The magical sounds of the sheng are revealed to us by Wu Wei, one of the greatest performers of this 3,000-year-old Chinese instrument, and blends with Liza Lim’s penchant for environmental themes, marking the start of her residency at Casa da Música. In How forests think, the main character is Nature, the vibrant life of forests far from human presence and brought to the stage in a surprising manner.
