Dies Irae

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini demonstrates the genius and timelessness of Rachmaninoff’s work, perfectly showcasing his ability to reinvent musical material. It features one of his favourite references, the Gregorian melody Dies Irae, and it resembles a highly technical piano concerto. Premiered in 1934 by the composer himself, the responsibility now falls to Yoav Levanon, a prodigiously talented 20-year-old pianist. For the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, music and spirituality share common roots, which in her case date back to the earliest childhood. The Wrath of God, an orchestral work she wrote in 2019, reflects these memories of sound as something sacred. The theme of death also pervades one of Wagner’s most celebrated works, the Prelude and Liebestod, which completes this unmissable programme, conducted by the acclaimed Anna Rakitina.
