Dies Irae

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini demonstrates the genius and timelessness of Rachmaninoff’s work, which perfectly expresses his ability to reinvent musical material. The piece is structured similarly to a highly technical piano concerto. Premiered in 1934 with the composer at the piano, the responsibility falls here to Yoav Levanon, a prodigiously talented 20-year-old, to perform the piece which includes one of Rachmaninoff’s favourite references: the Gregorian melody Dies Irae. For the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, music and spirituality have common roots, which in her case date back to her earliest childhood. The Wrath of God, performed here for the first time in Portugal, is an orchestral piece from 2019 that refers back to these memories of sound as something which is also sacred. The theme of death also marks one of Wagner’s most celebrated works, the Prelude and Liebestod, which completes this unmissable programme conducted by the acclaimed Anna Rakitina.
