Brahms’ Fourth

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Miguel Sepúlveda is an outstanding member of the new generation of Portuguese conductors. His career has taken off since winning Portugal’s Young Musician’s Award in 2022. In this evening concert, he presents us three magnificent symphonies, all evocative of an earlier age. Mendelssohn was just 14 when he wrote Symphony No. 10 for strings, prior to attaining fame, and in it we hear the spirit of Haydn and Mozart’s Viennese style. In fact, Haydn influenced several of Mozart’s works, such as the beginning to the famous “Haffner” Symphony. But the genius of Salzburg also cites himself in this work, in a finale based on a popular aria from Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In his final symphonic work, Brahms undertook a kind of musical testament in which he condensed the Baroque and Classic inheritance, in the formal style of Romanticism. Symphony No. 4 is a perfect example of how he reinterpreted historical musical allusions in his work: the fourth movement incorporates a theme in the form of a choral, taken from a Bach cantata, and builds a set of variations upon it.
