Repercussions
Percussion is one of the oldest forms of making music and it covers a multiplicity of instruments. In autumn 2025, it will be given particular prominence by Casa da Música, which will premiere and revisit compositions in which percussion is central and also host the International Percussion Gathering: “Transplanted Roots: Percussion Research Symposium”. This will be the first European edition of this initiative that has been held since 2015 in various continents, presenting seminars, studios, shows of instruments from all four corners of the world and a series of stimulating concerts in the area of contemporary percussion. The programme proposed by the Casa da Música ensembles includes the national premiere of music for these instruments – works for soloist and ensemble by the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho and German composer Isabel Mundry, hence the invitation extended to the soloists Colin Currie and Mário Teixeira. From another time, not too remote, comes the resonance of war and the power of portrayal of percussion in the context of a symphony written by Shostakovich during the Nazi siege of Leningrad.
