Tristan and Isolda

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Stefan Blunier, Orquestra Sinfónica’s Swiss principal conductor, has designed a programme for this concert that is criss-crossed by a deep existential meaning. The intensely tragic music in the Prelude to Act III of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolda announces the path of self-discovery that Tristan pursues from earthly life to eternity. Next up is Hans Werner Henze’s Tristan, for piano, electronic tapes and orchestra, one of Germany’s most remarkable post-WWII composers. This monumental symphony, composed and premiered in 1973, at a time when Henze was immersed in a deep psychological crisis, cites Wagner’s Prelude and Brahm’s Symphony No 1, among others. Finally, Brahms’s aforementioned symphony, composed over 21 years and finished in 1876, builds a powerful dramatic arc that culminates in a noble and triumphal melody, considered by many to be his version of the renowned Ode to Joy.
