THE RITE OF SPRING

ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DO PORTO CASA DA MÚSICA

Stravinsky’s career will forever be linked to ballet and Sergei Diaghilev’s company the Ballets Russes, for whom he wrote such famous scores as “The Firebird,” “Petrushka,” and “The Rite of Spring”. These works transformed Stravinsky into a worldwide celebrity. The music of “The Rite of Spring” even became one of the great orchestral challenges of the 20th century and continues to captivate audiences with its earthy energy associated with pagan rituals. Stravinsky’s enthusiasm for ballet led him to orchestrate one of the dances from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, “The Sleeping Beauty”. The ballet “Agon” was written many years later and premiered in 1957 by twelve dancers from the New York City Ballet, with choreography by George Balanchine.
