Tchaikovsky: The First Concerto

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Tchaikovsky returns to the Sala Suggia on an afternoon dedicated to music by women, so often unfairly overlooked throughout history. Marking International Women’s Day, the concert is conducted by Ustina Dubitsky, assistant conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, and features pianist Yeol Eum Son, who gained widespread recognition after winning silver medals at both the Tchaikovsky and Van Cliburn International Competitions. Performing with the Orquestra Sinfónica, the South Korean pianist plays Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, one of the most celebrated and inspired works of the Romantic repertoire. The programme continues with two emblematic Impressionist pieces by Lili Boulanger – D’un matin de printemps and D’un soir triste – colourful works written shortly before the French composer’s untimely death. The programme concludes with Janáček’s Jenufa-Rhapsodie, a tragic tale of a woman loved by two men.
