Sinfonia Lírica

ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DO PORTO CASA DA MÚSICA

A rich and intoxicating program featuring the most renowned works of composers who dominated Viennese musical life in the early 20th century. Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, often compared to Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, is a magnificent work in seven movements, for soprano, baritone, and orchestra, with sung texts taken from a novel by the Indian sage Rabindranath Tagore. From Zemlinsky’s most notable disciple, Arnold Schoenberg, we will hear the famous Verklärte Nacht, his most performed work. The program includes the Apocalyptic Fantasia by Viennese composer Matthias Hauer, a rarely performed piece that is a precursor to atonalism and the techniques of the Second Viennese School.
