ROLLER COASTER

ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DO PORTO CASA DA MÚSICA

A tragic accident in the First World War gave rise to a series of masterpieces by great composers of the 20th century. Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm after being shot, and when he recovered, he commissioned several works for the left hand, including Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 4, which we will hear performed by João Xavier. The Portuguese pianist, winner of the Young Musicians Award and laureate in several international competitions, is the central figure of the first part of the program, which opens with Shostakovich’s Scherzo op. 7, an orchestral piece that highlights the piano. Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony is one of the audience’s favorite works for its intense lyricism of passionate and warm themes, so characteristic of one of the most emblematic composers of Romanticism.
