Prokofieff Dynasty

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

In 1938, Romeo and Juliet, the first ballet inspired by the work of Shakespeare, premiered in Czechoslovakia. Written by Sergei Prokofiev, grandfather of another composer in focus in this programme, it was not immediately understood, but would later be regarded as one of the Russian composer’s most impressive works. Commissioned by Casa da Música, the Orquestra Sinfónica will perform the world premiere of Gabriel Prokofiev’s Concerto for Synthesiser and Orchestra. This is not the first time that Casa da Música has successfully performed the work of this increasingly important contemporary composer. Someone who has also achieved growing international renown is Igor C Silva, since being named Young Composer-in-Residence by the Casa da Música in 2012. His latest work, which combines jazz musicians with the Orquestra Sinfónica, was commissioned by ECHO under a programme which tours new work by young composers around important European concert venues.
