Pauliteiras da Scuola Mirandesa do Porto

Roots Festival

The Pauliteiras of the Scuola Mirandesa do Porto bring to life one of the most vibrant expressions of Portuguese popular culture: the dance of the sticks, originating in the Lands of Miranda. Inspired by the famous pauliteiros, their choreographies – the “lhaços” – bring stories that span centuries to the stage, evoking religious, romantic, agricultural, satirical, and even medieval themes. All this to the unmistakable sound of the bagpipes, bass drum, and snare drum, which echo the Mirandese spirit in the heart of Porto. More than just a dance group, the Pauliteiras da Scuola Mirandesa do Porto are guardians of a heritage that links the past to the present, bringing the rhythm of the pauliteiras to new generations.
