Outlaws

Quatuor Agate was chosen by Europe’s main concert venues as one of this season’s ECHO Rising Stars. Graduating in 2016 and already a winner of various international competitions and festivals, they present a programme which combines the music and stories of artists considered “outlaws” for defying the musical or social norms of their day. Carlo Gesualdo, a 16th-century composer, prince and murderer; Ethel Smyth, a 20th-century English composer, feminist and lesbian arrested for her activism; and Shostakovich, an opponent of the artistic doctrine of the Soviet regime. Whether murderers, subversives, convicts or censured, all had to answer for their actions and opinions. The writings of authors like Aldous Huxley, Julian Barnes and Jean Genet, inspired by these fascinating lives, provide the narrative substance that accompanies the masterpieces presented here.
