Orquestra XXI & Marie-Ange Nguci

Symphony of the New World

The folklore that Dvořák absorbed during his stay in the United States runs through Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”. Written for the then newly opened Carnegie Hall, the work blends the composer’s Bohemian heritage with pentatonic scales and syncopated rhythms from Native and African-American music, making it one of the most beloved pages in the symphonic repertoire. The return of Orquestra XXI to Sala Suggia also brings a piece by Andreia Pinto Correia, a composer who wrote this score at the invitation of the renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The work evokes Iberian processions, rituals where the religious and the pagan intersect. The programme also includes Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a dive into the folk roots of Norway, with soloist Marie-Ange Nguci. The musical direction is by Dinis Sousa, founder of Orquestra XXI, a prestigious ensemble that brings together Portuguese musicians living abroad.
