The Fascination of the Baroque

Remix Ensemble Casa da Música · Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música

The rapport between musicians in small ensembles is essential. These instrumental groups inspired many composers to write for them and to develop very specific mechanisms. In this concert included in the cycle On the Subject of the Baroque, the Viennese classics are set against modern-day compositions. The elegance of 18th-century courtly life, with major soloists performing concertos and symphonies, marked an era. Pugnani was a renowned violinist of the period, having achieved success in Italy, Paris and London. Haydn is thought to have written Violin Concerto No. 4 for Luigi Tomasini, then in the service of the Esterházy court. The chamber concerto ideal created a school of composers and is vivid in the works of Ligeti and Poppe. Sound masses and textural colour protrude in Ligeti, in a refined work of jewel-like sound. Enno Poppe’s Knochen (Bone) is a work based on the materials that surround us. The timbre and coldness stand out in an extremely virtuoso piece that submerges us in nature.
