Mahler and Shostakovich

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Hèctor Parra’s new orchestral work focuses on the great legacy of surrealist painter Joan Miró, the cycle Constellations: paintings on paper, created around 1940, in a terrifying context in which fascism dominated Spain and conquered Europe. There are three pieces that navigate between the anguish of an uncertain future and the need for affirmation. Another art form, poetry, gave rise to Mahler’s cycle Rückert-Lieder, composed in the early 20th century. With the award-winning voice of mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik, the Symphony explores this work full of lyricism, an example of the best that has been written for voice and orchestra. The program is completed with an essential score from the last century, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, oscillating between shadows and turmoil, suggesting at times devastated landscapes, at times triumphant freedom.
