Congratulations, Ravel!

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Marking the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel, the first part of this concert showcases the luminous Impressionist sound of his music, conducted by Jiří Rožeň. Originally composed for piano, Pavane pour une infante défunte is one of Ravel’s quintessential works, imagined as an homage to “a princess of the past.” Le Tombeau de Couperin, on the other hand, tells a different tale. Initially conceived in 1914 as a tribute to Baroque composer François Couperin, it was completed in 1917, with the shadow of war deeply influencing its movements, each dedicated to friends Ravel lost on the battlefield. The programme also features the music of Emilie Mayer, a prolific 20th-century composer, presenting an abstract journey through the drama of Faust. The evening concludes with Variations on a Theme by Haydn, based on eight pieces that Brahms believed were composed by Haydn but whose true authorship are still shrouded in mystery to this day.
