Carnival Concert

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

The traditional Carnival Concert at Casa da Música highlights the festive side of the symphonic repertoire. The programme features orchestral highlights from famous operas, beginning with the overture to La Gazza Ladra by Rossini, a piece that blends pomp with playful humour. “Dance of the Cockerels”, a well-known excerpt from Carl Nielsen’s opera Maskarade, evokes the lively atmosphere of a masked ball. Berlioz’s ever-popular overture to Le Carnaval Romain is a perfect fit for the occasion, as is the famous “Intermezzo” from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, which tells the tragic story of an actor who murders his wife and her lover on stage. Oriental inspirations permeate the mesmerizing “Bacchanale”from Samson and Delilah, Camille Saint-Saëns’s stunning opera. The concert concludes with the celebrated overture to Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, a comic opera that parodies the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
