Concertante music

Remix Ensemble Casa da Música · Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música

The focus of Around the Baroque is the coming together of different time periods. In this concert, the First Viennese School is represented by light works for courtly entertainment. Haydn and Mozart’s divertimentos and serenades enlivened the nights of the aristocracy in the Austrian Empire, but they were also important media for experimenting with new expressive mechanisms that were later applied to other works and contexts. The contrasts and irreverence of two of the giants of the First School are set against three modern-day pieces, including the world premiere of a work commissioned from this year’s Young Composer-in-Residence, João Carlos Pinto, and two outstanding figures on the international musical panorama. Scar is a restless piece by Rebecca Saunders, marked by the rupture of silence in an act of violence. The sinuousness of the musical materials permeates Duo Concertante for clarinet, cello and ensemble, performed in Portugal for the first time. Magnus Lindberg overlaps and mixes various duos in addition to those the piece is named after, creating a highly involving but disruptive sound experience.

During this show, strobe lighting effects will be used, which may affect people with epilepsy or other light-sensitive conditions.
