Chaplin: The Great Dictator

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música · Cine-concert

It was Charlie Chaplin’s first talking picture, a 1940 work of immense political dimension: in the midst of World War II, The Great Dictator is a tragicomedy that places Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini at the centre of its satire. The story unfolds in an imaginary country, yet the contours of the drama strongly correspond to the reality of the time. The film’s score was written by Chaplin himself and will be performed live at Sala Suggia, accompanying the film’s projection. Having overseen the recovery of the original scores by the celebrated British filmmaker, American conductor Timothy Brock leads this cine-concert, which transports the audience into the past with an inevitable eye on the present.
