Bruckner’s sixth

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

How does light reach the world? This is the question Liza Lim, this season’s resident composer, asks in A Sutured World, a concerto for cello and orchestra co-commissioned by Casa da Música. The question derives from a creative process that can sometime be difficult, between disorientation and the search for hidden places to explore. The answer is in the poetry, notes the composer: the light arrives through a crack, a tear, a broken wing, from a fall and from pleasure. The acclaimed and versatile cellist Nicolas Altstaedt will premiere Liza Lim’s work in Portugal. On the stage in the Sala Suggia another symphony, written outside time, will also be performed. Regarded as the most peculiar in Bruckner’s symphonic repertoire, the Sixth Symphony, composed in 1881, stands out for its subtlety and imaginative instrumentation.
