BAROQUE HERITAGE

ORQUESTRA BARROCA · REMIX ENSEMBLE

Domenico Scarlatti was a master of keyboard composition, with 555 sonatas that are a treasure of the Baroque period – and of which Andreas Staier is one of the most recognized interpreters. However, not a single concerto for soloists and orchestra is known to exist from him. At a time of great demand for this genre, the Englishman Charles Avison created a set of concerti grossi based on the sonatas of the Italian composer, which were already highly appreciated in the British Isles. Continuing this tradition, Staier himself adapts a quintet by Boccherini that represents the nocturnal music in the streets of Madrid. The concerto form, promoting dialogue between one or more soloists and the orchestral ensemble, has remained to this day as a fundamental form of musical expression and serves as the theme for the second part of this concert, in which the Remix Ensemble is conducted by Tito Ceccherini, founder of the prestigious ensemble Risognanze. The scores are by two of the most prominent names in contemporary music, Rebecca Saunders and Philippe Manoury, who have already captivated the audience in Porto.
