Beethoven’s Fourth

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música

Viennese Classicism takes central stage in this concert, conducted by Andreas Spering, one of the foremost specialists in this repertoire. The heart of the programme is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, composed in 1806 during a period of remarkable creativity. Its lightness and luminosity stand in contrast to the weightier symphonic works of the German master. Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, underwent multiple revisions, and it is believed that Leonora Overture No. 1 was written for a performance in Prague, a few years after the premiere of its first version. Joseph Haydn, a close friend of Beethoven, composed Symphony No. 49La Passione, a work imbued with the dramatic intensity and stark contrasts of Sturm und Drang, an artistic movement that sought new orchestral colors and bold emotional expression. The concert reflects on the sublime in late Classicism, set against the backdrop of a Vienna in profound transformation.
