A MÚSICA CORAL PORTUGUESA – FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO FERNANDO LOPES-GRAÇA

15th Free Course of Music History

This module explores different perspectives on Portuguese choral music. It addresses relevant historical moments, from the Iberian sixteenth-century polyphonists to the folk-inspired music of the twentieth century, and the multiplicity of more recent approaches (from the late twentieth century to the present day). The module focuses on the composer’s perspective, discussing, on the one hand, general aspects of composing for choir and, on the other hand, some specificities of composing for choir in the Portuguese language. The influence of practical and institutional circumstances is also discussed, showing how the music written is associated with the evolution of choral practice in the country.
